Kenzer's study is well-conceived north carolina civil war history and his scholarship both original north carolina civil war history and sound. The wealth of data in this book will be of enormous value to scholars interested in the Reconstruction Period. -- Roger L. Ransom, University of California, Riverside Most historians agree that only a small share of southern blacks experienced economic gains in the fifty years following the Civil War. Little attention has been focused, however, on the minority who successfully acquired property north carolina civil war history and conducted business during this time. In Enterprising Southerners, Robert C. Kenzer examines the characteristics of North Carolina's African-American population in order to explain the social north carolina civil war history and political factors that shaped economic opportunity for this group from the Civil War until 1915. In 1885, black newspaper editor George Allen Mebane circulated a questionnaire to other North Carolina landowners north carolina civil war history and merchants, hoping to document north carolina civil war history and evaluate black progress from the antebellum years through the two short decades since emancipation. This invaluable primary document, as well as tax records, business directories, credit ratings, north carolina civil war history and census reports, have enabled historian Kenzer to assemble a remarkably thorough portrait of North Carolina's black population. Not surprisingly, he finds that African Americans who were already free before the war enjoyed greater success than their newly freed counterparts. The same held true for mulattoes, who generally prospered more than blacks; in 1870, mulattoes were four times as likely as blacks to own real estate. What is surprising, Kenzer asserts, is that his research does not support lingering theories that the heritage of slavery adversely affected blacks'performance in the market economy. Instead, he blames economic barriers to development, such as lack of capital north carolina civil war history and poorly developed markets. This study not only provides a valuable history of one state's black population but also paves the way for similar scholarship in other southern states. Copyri

Horry County, South Carolina, 1730-1993

Horry County, South Carolina, 1730-1993
Horry County, South Carolina, 1730-1993 chronicles the colorful yet little-known past of the Palmetto State's largest county, a region now known primarily for the world-famous beaches of its Grand Strand. In this history of South Carolina's northeastern corner, Catherine H. Lewis tells the story of the state's least-understood region north carolina civil war history and of its transformation from a secluded farming district to one of North America's most popular vacation spots. Suggesting that Horry County's past does not fit neatly into South Carolina history, Lewis demonstrates its decided differences - political, social, north carolina civil war history and economic - from other regions of the state. She describes how, in contrast to the rest of South Carolina's coastal plain, which boasted grand plantations dependent on extensive slave labor, Horry County was divided into modest farms worked by yeoman farmers. She recounts its slow path to self-government; involvement in the Revolutionary, Civil, north carolina civil war history and World Wars; development of medical, social, north carolina civil war history and educational amenities; north carolina civil war history and rise to prominence as a tourism capital. History of South Carolina - South Carolina is one of the original states of the United States of America, and its history has been remarkable for an extraordinary commitment to political independence, whether from overseas or federal control. As a cornerstone of mercantilism and the slave trade, as the powder keg of the American Civil War, as the home of Jim Crow, and as the heart of the Dixiecrat movement, South Carolina's history has been the epitome of decentralization (federalism) in the United States.
